3rd Test Day 5 Live: India need 135 runs more to win

Pursuing victory in the third Test at Lord’s, India concluded day four with a precarious score of 58 for four in their second innings against England. Ben Stokes dismissed night-watchman Akash Deep with the final ball of the day, leaving KL Rahul unbeaten on 33. India’s opening batsman, Yashasvi Jaiswal (0), Karun Nair (14), and captain Shubman Gill (6) were dismissed cheaply, resulting in a deficit of 135 runs heading into the final day.

England was bowled out for 192 in their second innings in 62.1 overs. Spin all-rounder Washington Sundar (4/22) was the standout performer, taking four wickets. Mohammed Siraj (2/31) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/38) also contributed with two wickets each, while Akash Deep accounted for one wicket. Resuming the third session at 175 for six, England lost their last four wickets for only 17 runs. Washington dismissed Stokes (33) shortly after tea and removed the last man, Shoaib Bashir (2). Bumrah also claimed the wickets of Chris Woakes (10) and Brydon Carse (1).

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj was accused of exceeding the boundaries of sportsmanship in his celebration of the dismissal of England opener Ben Duckett. The incident occurred during the fourth day of the match, when Siraj delivered a spirited opening spell that resulted in the dismissal of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope. After dismissing Duckett, the pacer celebrated in close proximity to the batter during his follow-through, making contact as the opener commenced his return to the Lord’s long room.

Pacer Mohammed Siraj was penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his conduct towards Ben Duckett. Siraj was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “using language, actions, or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon their dismissal during an International Match.”

Despite the loss of four wickets in the final session, India all-rounder Washington Sundar remained composed. Sundar emphasized the positive aspects, stating that the team will approach the final day with determination to secure a victory. Sundar also contributed four wickets, leading England’s dismissal for 192.

“We have high expectations for the outcome, but we are prepared to accept any result. We will emerge with renewed confidence tomorrow. Our team has a strong batting lineup in the dressing room. The excitement is palpable, and winning a Test match at Lord’s is an extraordinary achievement. Therefore, I believe we are well-positioned for success,” Sundar concluded.

Sunil Gavaskar raises a significant concern regarding the DRS technology. While there were substantial deviations observed in the deliveries that appeared to be on the plumb line on Day 4, the delivery that resulted in Rahul’s dismissal appeared to be exceeding the boundary.

“It is noteworthy that this particular delivery did not exhibit a significant bounce. During Indian bowlers’ turns, the majority of deliveries were deemed to be above the stump in reviews. I am expressing my reservations about the reliability of this technology,” Gavaskar asserts.

At the conclusion of the 34th over, Nitish Reddy and Ben Stokes engaged in a brief exchange of words. The England captain appeared to approach Reddy and engage in a verbal conversation with him, to which Reddy responded by shaking his head. Stokes, in turn, retreated with a smile.

Subsequently, Brydon Carse approached Reddy and appeared to be engaged in a verbal altercation with him, pointing a finger at him as well.

Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy are trying to save India’s ship from sinking in the first session on Day 5 of the high-pressure third Test against England at Lord’s. India have reached 111/7 after 39 overs, and still need 85 more to chase down the target of 193. India lost the wickets of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahula and Washington Sundar inside 40 minutes of the first session. Jofra Archer bowled a breathtaking spell, castling Pant with a ripper before taking a stunning one-handed catch to send Washington back. KL Rahul was dismissed after a sensational DRS call by England captain Ben Stokes. Shubman Gill-led India will become the first Indian team since 1986 to win back-to-back Tests on English soil should they win today. The winner of the match will also go up 2-1 in the five-match series.

India endured the worst-possible ending to a tumultous first session on Day 5 of the high-pressure third Test against England, going eight wickets down with still 81 more runs required to win. Having lost Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar in quick succession earlier, India saw a resilient partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy end on the stroke of Lunch, with the latter getting out. India have reached 112/8 at Lunch, chasing a target of 193. Jofra Archer breathed fire with the ball, sending Pant’s stumps cartwheeling before taking a one-handed blinder to dismiss Washington Sundar. England captain Ben Stokes took a genius DRS call to dismiss KL Rahul. If India pull off a miracle and win, they will become the first Indian team since 1986 to win back-to-back Tests in England.
