Current Status of Hospital Parking Ramp 1
The Hospital Parking Ramp 1, a substantial 165,000-square-foot structure, is set to “remain open for now.” Despite its extensive deferred maintenance and the fact that it does not meet current design standards for vehicle size, officials have confirmed that it will continue to serve visitors until further notice. This ramp is planned for demolition in early 2026 as part of the overall campus redevelopment.
Future Plans for the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center
Additionally, the four-story, 69,000-square-foot Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center, built in 1967, was also scheduled for demolition this fall. However, it will “remain for now.” Although the new $249 million UI Health Sciences Academic Building has recently opened, the speech and hearing center’s services will still be relocated as per the strategic health care improvements.
Updates on Project Developments and Financial Stability
In light of these developments, plans for a hospital entrance and skywalk modifications are currently “on hold for now.” While UI Health Care is in a relatively stable financial position compared to many academic health care systems nationwide, some adjustments to capital projects will be necessary moving forward. Associate Vice President Brad Haws emphasized their commitment to modernization, stating, “We will do the best we can with the resources available to us.” The administration’s dedication towards enhancing the access and quality of services remains at the forefront of their agenda, even amidst shifting timelines and project scopes.
